THE MILAT/MYPART ACADEMY - AN OVERVIEW
History was made on the 16th of April 2007 when the first intake of Cadets to the Military Led Academic Training (MILAT) and Military Led Youth Programme of Apprenticeship and Reorientation Training (MYPART) stepped smartly into the compound of the Old Mausica Teachers Training College to begin their three year residency in the first (and to this date only) such military led youth programme in the Caribbean.
Conceptualized in our local context by the Prime Minister, this unique social intervention under the umbrella of the Specialized Youth Services Programmes (SYSP) seeks to address the ever increasing despondency of youth from dysfunctional backgrounds by providing them with a safe, structured and regulated setting within which a second chance at ambitions, hopes and dreams could be nurtured.
With over forty five years of experience in creating this very environment, the
Presently at the Academy two intakes designated by year of entry (0701, 0901) cohabit on campus. The senior cadets of the MILAT and MYPART programmes are currently in the third year of their programme and are scheduled to graduate in June 2010. The second intake inducted last year are midway through their Foundation Year, experiencing an in house curriculum of military and academic instruction, after which assignment to two further years of either the MILAT or MYPART stream of instruction will then take place in four months time.
The ultimate goal of the MILAT and MYPART programmes is to effect training, certification, and most critically positive character development in the lives of the youth most at risk in our nation. After three years, we aim to repatriate into society a model citizen epitomizing the values of respect, personal responsibility, leadership, and filled with confidence that he can make a positive contribution to national development, reflecting the same personal transformation he has undergone in our care for three years.
